Our special client Grace came in for some special treatment today. It’s a few days before her first day of 4th grade at Dallastown middle school in Dallastown, Pa. Remember how you were on your first day? Concerned what you look like, what you are going to wear, meeting new people, etc. Our new friend Grace has naturally frizzy curly unruly hair that was very hard to manage.

When I met Grace, she was hanging out in the waiting room for her step mom. I said to her step mom who is really an amazing person, that I could help her daughter with managing her curly frizzy  hair. She took us up on that offer.

Today was no different for our new friend Grace. She came in with

frizzy curl hair that was recently cut short at another salon. She was afraid of the flat iron based on a previus experience at home. Like many of us at some point, the curling or flat iron got a little close to the skin and bam, a little burning experience. We have all been there. She was nervous, afraid, and not sure if this was going to work for her because she told us she liked her curls and was not sure about the flat iron heat close to her scalp. We understood.

Her stylist Alex T spent some time explaining the process of our Brazilian Blowout Keratin Treatment. Alex talked about the benefits of the amino acids that actually protect the outside layer of the hair along with protecting the inside of the hair. She explained that the Brazilian Blowout is safe plus it would make her hair feel silky soft. Grace allowed us the opportunity to perform the service on her bangs and along the side of her face where she was super curly in addition to being frizzy. Once her bangs were smoothed and straightened, Grace was all in for the rest of her hair. Does the full moon affect human behavior?

My colleagues and I have been tracking the “weirdness” that brings out the best of them around this time. I said to my coworkers today, “hey, can you check the full moon schedule? It feels a little off in here today with the way people are acting.”

Sure enough, spot on with the feeling. Big ole’ moon blinking out at me tonight. After today, I just don’t know what to say. Do you remember that movie called Impulse? If you don’t, here is how it goes. the actors were able to do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted without the reprecussions of their behavior. Behavior such as plowing into someone’s car because you didn’t like their driving. Another is yelling at someone without filter, just irrational non thinking behavior, impulsive.

This is what we had to manage in our day today. People just don’t think about how they act in front of others. It doesn’t matter what age, its just agressive, non mannerly people trying to push others around to get their way, no manners interrupting while others talk, I mean peoples’ behaviors hit an all time high today.

All I”m saying is there is truth to the moon situation that the natural elements cause people to act not so normal. Crazy “loco” is the word I would use today.

I need all of us to remember that we as human beings are not computers per se. We all have feelings, we all strive to be our best (well, most of us), we all work together in this big world to make it better. I was projecting there. We need to be patient and respectful of others’ property, respectful of feelings, respect means you just buy or take things that aren’t yours without expecting some kind of fall out from the person that you are taking from.

Whatever happened to giving without expecting anything in return? Whatever happened to helping someone without expecting someone in return? How about making your little part of the world better for the next person coming in after you? Truly, we should expect the best for ourselves while knowing we made it easier for someone else today.

Patience is a gift that you give yourself and others. Kindness is about actually caring about another person instead of always thinking of whats in it for me. What you put out there is what comes back to you tenfold. Being honest is also a characteristic that is admired these days. Can I just say that I’ve run into many people who blantantly lie to my face and they believe their lies! I cannot participate with people like this. I was always taught to treat others better than you treat yourself. I adhered to that rule in our family.

Hair extensions save haircut gone wrong!

Busy day as usual at Indulge Salon on South George Street. My front desk coordinator mentioned that I had a hair extension consultation with a woman that needed to talk to me. I said, “great.” I love transformations and the excitement of the mystery woman would be fun.

The time came for a hair extension consultation. The attractive dark haired woman sat in my chair to have me evaluate what she had going on. I said, “tell me what’s on your mind.” She started to tell me what happened that brought her short bobbed haircut in and that she hated her short hair. When I tell you that she is really attractive I mean she had big eyes, dark brown to black hair and carried herself as a professional. She had thick hair. I thought this isn’t bad until she showed me some before pictures of her longer hair.

I had to look a little closer to fix her color by evening it out in tone. After fixing her hair color, I had to decide how to proceed with adding hair extensions that looked natural and moved naturally with such short thick hair. See BEFORE photo of our client Cindi Wycheck, York, Pa.

Side note: having super thick blunt hair can be challenging for a stylist to apply hair extensions to make them look like its your hair. We have to prevent those shorter hairs from sticking out of the longer hair extensions. This can be challenging if not done correctly with the right type of extensions such as fusion, tape-in or clamps. Even though we do a great job putting them in, what matters the most is the client can manage them at home by blow drying, styling and not using hot heating tools at the scalp.

Cindi was realistic with her situation. She didn’t feel like herself with short hair. She knew she could “live” with it but knew she wanted long hair like she did before she went to Florida.

As most clients that have never had hair extensions, they vasilate between the length, maintenance and cost of extensions. She gave herself the right amount of time to think about what she wanted and I gave her the options. We found at a critical time that the amount of hair extensions that we were using called Fusion were not going to be enought to cover her blunt ends. I had to keep in mind we didn’t want to break the bank either. We both knew the goal had to be to cover the blunt ends.

Another option was to cut her hair shorter in the back to blend the cut out part behind her ear  but we poo pooed that decision because she didn’t want her hair short. I installed tape-in hair extenstions for the top section to cover the other FUSION extensions. I strategically thinned out the blunt edges making them blend better. TheTAPE- IN hair extensions had to be put in on angles that suited pulling her hair up. I was pretty excited by the time we were done because I knew her hair looked so natural as if she hadn’t had her hair cut.

As a result, Cindi was a happy girl again. She felt like herself and could concentrate on her work without being self conscious of her short hair. The cool part of her hair extensions was that she is able to handle them, she can curl her natural hair, wash it, swim with them, and pull them up gently into a braid. She will be able to save money on haircuts because the hair extensions will protect her hair, Hair extension hair is much thicker therefore will lay over the shorter hair.  We were able to fill in the sparse areas that were cut out. That part made me feel good. It was such a pleasure to see Cindi smile again. I bet she won’t be having her friend cut her hair again. Still friends!
