As you know, when I fly, Kimberly, the owner of Indulge Salons, it seems that I attract a story. Normally, I just want to get to my destination which was Buffalo, New York about an hour a way from Rochester, New York. I was there on business doing some speaking with Salon owners from all over.

This adventure includes two legs of a trip from BWI to Philadelphia. Easy enough right? Of course not, we were hanging out on the tarmac waiting for another plane or clearing to park the plane. Now you know that USAirways is my “favorite” airline to work with but they had a comfortable price for the time I needed. The second part of my flight was from Philadelphia to Buffalo Niagra Airport which was super cute. Well, longer story short I almost missed my flight from the Philadelphai to Buffalo. I was meeting my daughter in Buffalo and she was waiting for me at the gate in Phila. She had stalled whomever was the gate keeper because we could not miss that flight. I was presenting and couldn’t miss the deadline time. I finally got  off the plane and RAN to the gate. Barely made it so a shout out to the girls at the gate in Phila helping us make the flight. I’m telling you…..this airline just keeps moving gates, not as efficient. I don’t get it. I don’t have issues with any other airline like them. They overbooked the flight back to BWI by 14 seats. I was not budging. I have done it to help someone else out but tonight I had to get home. My son has an upper respiratory condition that has developed and I just couldn’t be away any longer.

Shout out to the lady Helen that I sat beside in Philadelphia. Her daughter just got married in Germany and Helen’s husband is a real cowboy. I learned how to make my cowboy boots fit better. You buy them tight, fill them with water until softened and then you wear them all day until the boots fit you perfectly and mold around your foot. Now this was a trip that was worth the information.

The reason I report my air travel adventures is because I’m consistently shocked at the dress code of travelers. I should say what dress code do they live by? I saw and smelled hair while I sat in my seat. I must say that people were hot and sweaty this trip more than most. Is it policy to not spray a fragrance on a plane? We need it to survive guys! For those of you that travel all of the time, I feel sorry for you its not fun doing this day in and day out for those close quarters in a plane.

I’ll keep you posted on my fingerlakes winery tour next blog post!

Chasta, one of our Sr. Stylists of seven years, and I had been invited to train behind the scenes of a workshop with Christoper and Sonia Dove. they are reknowned haircolor and haircutting artists that represent Wella Sebastian.

This day was pretty intensive working behind the scenes. We are always willing to do whatever it takes such as shampooing their models, applying haircolor, blow drying and styling hair for them. Even though this may be a help to them with all of the models they work on, we felt prvilieged to work with them all day. We were the ones that had the opportunity to learn more advanced thinking on “how” they formulated haircolor, how they strategically managed the design of the cut for the model’s face in addition to what they were demonstrating for the show. We also experienced some pretty cool ways to highlight and to use the NEW Innosense haircolor product line that prevents scalps from itching. We learned how to use this really cool product called Color I.D. This was the most amazing part of the “shadowing”.

Blurring the lines from highlighting this fall and winter 2014

Color I.D. allows the stylist to formulate a color and then we can add an ingredient to the formula and actually lay it onto the next color without it bleeding onto the next color laying on top of it. As you can see in this photo that the depth of the amethyst olor on the bottom and base is a stunning backdrop for the vibrant red violete mahogany color on the top and sides. We are calling this collection “Blurring the lines” which blends the scalp into the highlighting, balayage, and the other colors that sit next to the  the base root color.

Brielle is an adorable teenager that is yearning for more excitement in her hair.

Brielle Carbaugh came into salon with spotty colors trying to color her own hair and left with beautiful dimensional auburn reddish brown hair from Indulge salon

She is a good student but tired of her hair color. She and her grandmother went shopping and while out Brielle is ready for her adventure and picks up some red violet shaded hair color that appeals to her on a “box”. She applies her color, unbeknownst to mom, to discover it didn’t cover everywhere and it faded. Mom comes home to discover her NEW transformed Brielle!

I happen to know Brielle’s mother whom is delightful and cool. Mom decides they needed to get her new hair color fixed. They pop in to see me at our South George Street location to see what could be done.

Brielle had uneven color application with spotty results

Step 1. We started with analyzing her hair to see what we should do first. As you can see she had some highlights from a previous color that were peeking out along with faded out red violet colors that were intermingled along the hair shaft. She had some natural hair color at the scalp too. To make our color challenge even more exciting, we had to look at the health of her hair which effects the end result.

Phase 2 – filling her hair

Step 2.  We were contemplating removing all color off the hair which could have caused more maintenance. Instead we strategically evened out the color which was not easy to do. As you can see we had several staff members helping us. Working with hair color correction can be challenging because of the previous color, water influences, product buildup and especially how the hair is maintained.

Step 3. We weren’t satisfied with the quality of the how the hair absorbed the haircolor. We had to reapply the color to fill the hair to get an even fabric so to speak. We were pretty happy with the 2nd application of color tone we added.

Phase 3 second filler application

As you can see, the results were much better and the hair is even as best we could while keeping her hair in good condition. If you are reading this, you have to understand we are working with so many elements in the hair that we have to make decisions based on hair texture, quality of the hair, porosity (ability to take in moisture and hold it) vitamins, well water and anything else that is taken inside the body which can coat the hair preventing the hair color to absorb. Sometimes the hair will not take anymore color into it. Hair color correction takes time and is not a quick fix usually especially if you want your hair to look natural.

Step 4. We felt that we needed to have a more natural look to her hair by adding some darker auburn without what we call “browning” it out. This ended up being beautiful with the BLURRING of color technique that appears to blend the hair. This technique allowed our newly transformed Brielle to let her hair fade naturally without damaging her hair and keeping it from turning that ugly orange color that can happen when the hair is not properly cared for. This actually happens by many clients more often than not. Even so, looking at the photo of her phase 3, she still has a beautiful shine to it. As you can see the “after” photos are just gorgeous from root to ends with a healthy shine and gloss to the hair. All of this was done with safe deposit only color that actually gives her hair more protein without the weight.
